Global Ice Sheet Mapping Orbiter Concept: Airborne Experi- ments

چکیده

We describe tests of a spaceborne, radar-system concept envisioned to measure the spatial reflectivity and the 3dimensional surface and basal topography of terrestrial ice sheets and to determine the physical properties of the glacier bed. We conducted experiments during May 2006 over northwestern Greenland using a 150 MHz radar operated from a Twin Otter aircraft. We conducted more extensive experiments in September 2007 over northern and central Greenland when we operated 150 and 450 MHz radars installed on the NASA P-3 aircraft. Here we compare 150 and 450 MHz data and show an example of interferometrically derived basal topography.

An Airborne Radar System for High-Resolution Mapping of Internal Layers

Accumulation rate is a key variable in assessing the mass balance of polar ice sheets. An improved knowledge of the mass balance of polar ice sheets is needed to determine their role in current and future sea level rise. Existing accumulation maps, derived from sparsely distributed ice cores and pits, contain accumulation rate errors as large as 20% in certain areas. Remote sensing methods to c...

Application of Aircraft Laser Altimetry to Glacier and Ice Cap Mass Balance Studies

The Arctic ice caps and glaciers serve as important indicators of climate change and also make a small, but significant, contribution to changes in global sea level. Consequently, understanding their mass balance is of considerable interest. We are examining the current state of mass balance of the major Canadian ice caps in the greater Baffin Bay area in the context of recent climate condition...

Airborne SAR Tomographic Ice Sheet Sounding

A new tomographic ice sounding method is introduced to provide airborne swath measurements of ice sheet thickness and basal scattering properties. Two major challenges have been solved: left-right signal separation; and surface clutter rejection. The new technique was demonstrated using data we collected in 2006 and 2008 from a VHF-band, multiple phase-center radar system flown in Greenland. Fo...
